Kia ora Tatou,

I have been granted, and the Board of Trustees approved, a terms’ ‘sabbatical leave’ and will not be attendant at Raglan Area School through Term 2 of 2015. During this time Bronwyn Haitana and Quenten Browne will be sharing the roles of Acting Principal and Deputy Principal.

The criteria for this sabbatical is 5 years or more as Principal and a number of years as a teacher, in my case well exceeded at 42 years. There are two elements to the leave; one is to undertake a piece of relevant research and to publish the finding and the other for refreshment.

My research is in the field of ‘Principals attesting teaching staff against the Registered Teachers Criteria with particular regard to Maori achieving as Maori’ and, concurrently, looking at how kura can connect students to Iwi Education Plans. I will be visiting other schools and speaking with principal colleagues, working with NZ Teachers Council (soon to be EDUCANZ), with Ministry, and with Kaumatua and Iwi representatives in relation to Iwi Educational Plans and strategic visions.

As for refreshment, some travel I expect, and a lot of books waiting to be read. Some of them, though not all, are to be educationally edifying. Perhaps also a carving or two, and certainly a lot of conversations with Kawharu Greensil about suitable installations for the kura perhaps for the 150th Jubilee in 2015.

I wish Bronwyn and Quenten the very best and, of course staff and students, a very successful term. I will be available to them for advice and guidance though I expect they will not need me at all!

Nga mihi

Malcolm
