Strike Action School Closure 11 May 2023

The Raglan Area School Board of Trustees has now been formally advised that the Teachers of our school who are members of the Post Primary Teachers Association (PPTA) and New Zealand Educational Institute (NZEI) unions will be taking a one day strike action this Thursday, 11 May 2023. This strike differs based on region, with the Waikato Area Schools affected on 11 May 2023.

The Board has carefully considered the availability of teaching staff, and has decided that our school cannot provide normal teaching as well as supervision on this day, therefore, the school will officially be closed for teaching and supervision on the day of the strike

Therefore, please make alternative arrangements for the care of your child/children (in particular those under 14 years of age) during the period of the strike as no teaching and lessons will be provided. Support staff will be onsite, however, teaching staff will not be sufficient to teach and supervise students.

This is a significant event nationwide and the Board of Trustee’s decision concerning our students’ safety has not been made lightly. We respectfully ask that you make appropriate arrangements for students to not attend school on Thursday, May 11 2023

It is important to also note this strike closure affects only Area and Secondary Schools and therefore does not affect other schools in the Whaingaroa area therefore bus services will continue to run for those schools.

Strike Action Classroom Opening Hours Prior to 8.30am

In addition to the abovementioned school closure on 11 May, as part of the strike action by our Teachers which are members of our PPTA and NZEI unions, our Teachers are unable to start work until 8:30am for the duration of Term 2.

The impact of this, is that from 8:20am (when our school opens to students) until Teachers which are members of our PPTA and NZEI unions are able to start work at 8:30am, we will have a limited number of non-union staff supervising students in the the Kura Teina playground areas and classrooms will not be open until 8.30am.

Accordingly, the Board has been asked to advise parents to please drop your children off school on or after 8:30am until the end of the Term, or until we advise otherwise.

Rostered Home Strike Schedule

The notice provided to you on Wednesday, 3 May 2023 with regards to the rostered home strikes for the named year levels still applies and is in addition to the above strike impacts. I have included a further copy of this below as a reminder for you.

Thank you for your understanding, it is a difficult time as we work our way through the impact of the ongoing strikes on our school and in particular, being an Area School.

Should you have any concerns or queries regarding the regional strike action and the rolling rostering home please make contact with the school office as soon as possible.
